2009-10 Women's Swimming Preview
STANDISH, ME - The women's swim team continued to improve in its second season as a varsity sport at Saint Joseph's College. Last year's team placed second in the GNAC Championship, broke 14 individual and 5 relay records, and showed the ability to hang with the upper echelon teams at the New England Championships in February.
Aside from the success in the pool, it's quite possible that the program's most important improvement last season was the new ability to host meets in the Harold Alfond Center. The Monks hosted the first meet in team history, against Husson, on February 7th. St. Joe's is slated to host three meets this year.
Key returners for the Royal Blue include Hannah Gajewski '12 (Biddeford, ME/McAuley), Ashton Piers '09 (Falmouth, ME/Deering), Jamie Wojtkiewicz '12 (Bedford, NH), Rose Maccarrone '12 (Hingham, MA), and Amanda Lanoix '12 (Lyman, ME). Look for upperclassmen Lindsay Bates '10 (Waterville, ME), Katie Brooks '11 (North Kingstown, RI) and Danielle Harmon '10 (Poland, ME) to help lead the Monks as the team pushes for its first conference title as a third-year member of the GNAC.
Head Coach Rick Horr, in his second year at the helm, expects the freshman class to contribute as well. First-year swimmers Christine Cote '13 (Biddeford, ME) and Brittanie Walsh '13 (South Portland, ME) bring plenty of high school experience to the squad and should help the team in its quest for regional prominence this winter.
Saint Joseph's kicks off the 2009-10 season with a meet at Husson University on Saturday, October 31st at 1:00 PM. In the first home meet of the year, St. Joe's will host Elms College on November 14th at 12:00 PM.
