STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (10-0-2, 5-0-1 GNAC) toppled Rivier University (1-12-1, 0-6-0 GNAC), 5-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Applying constant pressure, the Monks knocked in two goals in the first half as sophomore Austin Ward (North Andover, Mass.) netted his fifth of the year in the 27th minute and junior Quinn Hewitt (Cape Elizabeth, Maine) scored off a Jason Umbehr (Wallingford, Conn.) pass at the 42:23 mark.
Senior Noah Robinson (Wappingers Falls, N.Y.) potted his team-leading seventh goal of the year with a ground-hugging shot from the top of the box, off a Jackson Taylor (Gorham, Maine) cross, in the 64th minute.
Umbehr made it a 4-0 game when he headed in his second goal of the season off a perfect right-to-left cross from junior Noah Elmore (Berlin, Vt.) at the 73:59 mark and, seven minutes later, senior Brennan Goodrich (Essex Junction, Vt.) scored his first career goal. Senior James Stevens (Marshfield, Mass.) was credited with an assist on the Monks' fifth strike.
Saint Joseph's held sizeable leads in shots (37-1), shots on goal (15-0), and corner kicks (21-0) in the victory.
Rivier senior netminder Collin Deyarmin (Raymond, N.H.) made five saves, including several acrobatic stops, in the losing effort.
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 12-2-1 all-time versus Rivier University and has now defeated the Raiders in 12-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2007 campaign. The Monks have not allowed a goal to the Raiders in each of the last seven contests between the GNAC foes.
Saint Joseph's will host University of Saint Joseph (CT) on Saturday at 1:30 PM. The Monks will honor the program's eight seniors with a Senior Day ceremony prior to kick-off.
