Don Flanagan was named the head coach of the Saint Joseph’s College men’s and women’s golf programs in July 2023. In his first year, Flanagan guided the Monks to a fourth-place finish at the 2023 GNAC Championship with a 672 team card. Freshman standout Braden Camire led the way with a 161 (+21) to tie for fifth overall, earning GNAC Co-Rookie of the Year and First Team All-Conference honors.
The Monks built on that performance in the fall of 2024, finishing as the GNAC Championship runner-up with a 646 (+86). Under Flanagan’s leadership, Drew Mathieu and Braden Camire placed fourth and fifth, respectively, with scores of 155 (+15) and 157 (+17), both earning GNAC First Team All-Conference honors.
Flanagan also helped spearhead the development of the Saint Joseph’s women’s golf program during his first year. In 2023, senior Erica Irvin and sophomore Averi Beaudoin made program history by competing in the Monks’ first women’s golf tournament, hosted by Southern Maine Community College at Purpoodock Golf Club on September 24. The following year, the Monks competed in a full eight-event schedule, with sisters Averi and Reese Beaudoin representing the program as individuals. Reese Beaudoin enjoyed a breakout season, earning three Medalist honors, and the Beaudoin duo teamed up to win the USM Cup—a Ryder Cup format event—on September 8.
Prior to joining Saint Joseph’s, Flanagan served as the head coach of the co-ed varsity golf team at Monmouth Academy (Monmouth, Maine), where he led the Mustangs to multiple Maine State Championship appearances and a conference title. His coaching tenure included mentoring an individual state champion, several top-five finishers, and two New England Championship qualifiers.
Coach Flanagan has a deep connection to the Monks’ program through his son, Trevor, a four-year standout who helped Saint Joseph’s capture consecutive GNAC titles in 2021 and 2022. Trevor, a 2023 team captain, earned four individual Medalist finishes, First Team All-Conference recognition, and was named the College’s 2023 Senior Male Athlete of the Year.
“I am fired up to join the Monks' golf program,” said Flanagan. “My goal is to continue the winning tradition and build upon the success established by former coaches and players. Most importantly, I want to prepare our student-athletes for success in the classroom, on the course, and in life.”
In addition to his work in golf, Flanagan has held coaching roles at Monmouth Academy in girls' basketball, boys' basketball, and baseball at various levels.
Outside of athletics, Flanagan serves as a Battalion Chief and Paramedic for the Auburn Fire Department, where he has worked since 1995. He is also an instructor for the Maine Fire Service Institute at Southern Maine Community College. A former two-sport athlete at Colby College, Flanagan later earned associate degrees in Fire Science and Paramedicine from SMCC in 1998 and 2005, respectively.
