Gary Stevens serves as the Special Advisor to the President for Athletics at Saint Joseph’s College of Maine. In this role, Stevens draws upon more than four decades of experience in education and nearly 30 years in athletic administration to provide strategic guidance and support to the College’s athletics program.
Stevens previously served as Saint Joseph’s Interim Director of Athletics, beginning in September 2024. During his tenure, he provided leadership and stability for the department while supporting the College’s coaches, staff and student-athletes through a period of transition.
Before joining the Monks, Stevens spent 17 years as the Director of Athletics and Student Activities at Thornton Academy in Saco. Under his leadership, Thornton captured 22 team state championships across eight sports. He previously served for 11 years as an athletic administrator at Bonny Eagle High School, where he also worked as an assistant principal and social studies teacher.
A Certified Master Athletic Administrator, Stevens has held numerous leadership positions within the Maine Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association, Maine Principals’ Association and National Interscholastic Athletic Administrators Association. His professional honors include the NIAAA Thomas E. Frederick Award of Excellence and Frank Kovaleski Professional Development Award. In 2025, he was inducted into the NIAAA Hall of Fame.
Stevens began his career in education as a teacher and coach, working with basketball, volleyball, softball, cross country, baseball and soccer programs. He has also served as an adjunct professor in the Saint Joseph’s College Sport and Exercise Science program.
A native of Lincoln, Maine, Stevens graduated cum laude from Harvard University in 1983 with a bachelor’s degree in history. He earned a master’s degree in American and New England Studies from the University of Southern Maine and a Master of Science in Education with a concentration in school leadership from Saint Joseph’s in 2015.
Stevens is also the co-author of Stolen Seasons: How Maine Sports Survived the COVID-19 Pandemic, which chronicles the challenges, resilience and creativity displayed throughout Maine’s sports community during the pandemic.
