Overview:

Tyler Ackley was named the fifth head coach in the history of the Saint Joseph's College men's basketball program in September 2021 and has quickly reestablished the Monks among the top programs in the Great Northeast Athletic Conference.

Through five seasons, Ackley has compiled an 86-54 overall record, guided the Monks to consecutive GNAC Championships (2025, 2026), two NCAA Tournament appearances, and earned back-to-back GNAC Coach of the Year honors. Under his leadership, Saint Joseph's has also reached three consecutive GNAC Championship games while developing numerous All-Academic, All-Conference, and All-Region student-athletes.

2025-26 Season

Ackley guided Saint Joseph's to one of the most memorable seasons in program history in 2025-26. Despite opening the year 3-8 while battling injuries, the Monks won 17 consecutive games — the third-longest active winning streak in NCAA Division III at the time — to finish 20-9 overall and a perfect 12-0 in GNAC regular-season play.

Saint Joseph's successfully defended its conference title with a victory over the University of Saint Joseph in the GNAC Championship game, earning the program's third GNAC title since joining the conference in 2007 and its fourth NCAA Tournament appearance. The Monks closed the season with a narrow 71-67 loss to nationally ranked Babson College in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament.

Ackley was named GNAC Coach of the Year for the second consecutive season, while the Monks swept several of the conference's major awards. Remijo Wani was selected as the GNAC Player of the Year, GNAC Tournament MVP, Maine State Player of the Year, NABC Third Team All-America, NABC First Team All-District, and D3hoops.com First Team All-Region. Wani Donato earned GNAC and Maine State Defensive Player of the Year honors along with D3hoops.com Second Team All-Region recognition. Davis Mann was named both the GNAC and Maine State Rookie of the Year, while John Paul Frazier collected Second Team All-GNAC honors.

2024-25 Season

Ackley led the Monks to a 24-5 overall record and a 13-1 conference mark during the 2024-25 campaign, helping Saint Joseph's earn the top seed in the GNAC Tournament. The season marked a major step forward for the program as the Monks returned to the top of the conference standings and positioned themselves for one of the best postseason runs in recent history.

Saint Joseph's captured its second GNAC Championship with a 79-72 victory over Lasell University, securing the program's first NCAA Tournament appearance since 2009. The conference title also marked the beginning of back-to-back championship seasons under Ackley's leadership.

Following the season, Ackley earned his first GNAC Coach of the Year award. Remijo Wani was named GNAC Player of the Year, NABC First Team All-District, D3hoops.com First Team All-Region, and First Team All-GNAC. Wani Donato claimed GNAC Defensive Player of the Year honors, Silvano Ismail was selected as GNAC Rookie of the Year, and both Ismail and John Paul Frazier earned All-GNAC recognition.

2023-24 Season

The Monks finished the 2023-24 season with an 18-10 overall record and a 12-2 mark in GNAC play, continuing the program's steady rise under Ackley's direction. Saint Joseph's emerged as one of the top teams in the conference and advanced to the program's first GNAC Championship game since 2014.

Saint Joseph's produced a dramatic postseason run with victories over Emmanuel and Albertus Magnus to earn a spot in the conference title game. The Monks ultimately fell to the University of Saint Joseph in the GNAC Championship, but the season helped establish the foundation for the back-to-back championship campaigns that followed.

John Paul Frazier highlighted the Monks' postseason honors by earning First Team All-GNAC accolades, continuing his development as one of the top guards in the conference.

2022-23 Season

Saint Joseph's posted a 15-12 overall record during the 2022-23 season and earned a home GNAC Tournament game after finishing second in the conference's North Division. The season marked another step forward for the program as Ackley continued to build the Monks into a consistent postseason contender.

The Monks advanced to the GNAC Semifinals, gaining valuable postseason experience and continuing their climb within the conference. The season also featured the emergence of several key contributors who would help shape the program's future success.

Freshman guard John Paul Frazier was named GNAC Rookie of the Year after a standout debut season, while Griffin Foley earned Third Team All-GNAC honors for the second consecutive year. The individual recognition reflected the program's growing depth and helped set the stage for Saint Joseph's run to three consecutive GNAC Championship games.

2021-22 Season

In his first season at the helm, Ackley guided Saint Joseph's back to the GNAC Tournament and helped the Monks earn a first-round postseason victory over Johnson & Wales. The win provided an early sign of progress as the program began a new era under his leadership.

The Monks' season came to a close against eventual conference champion University of Saint Joseph, but the campaign helped establish the foundation for the program's rapid rise in the GNAC over the next several seasons.

Griffin Foley earned Third Team All-GNAC honors following the season, giving Saint Joseph's an All-Conference selection during Ackley's first year leading the program.

Previously:

Ackley arrived at Saint Joseph's after four seasons as The John "Swisher" Mitchell Assistant Coach at Colby College. During his tenure, the Mules advanced to their first NESCAC Championship game and first NCAA Tournament appearance in 23 years in 2020. Colby finished the 2019-20 season with a 24-4 record and spent much of the year ranked nationally, climbing as high as No. 5 in the D3hoops.com Top 25 poll.

Before Colby, Ackley spent three seasons as an assistant coach at Nebraska Wesleyan University, helping recruit seven players who combined for 14 all-conference selections, including a Josten's Award recipient, three D3hoops.com All-Americans, a conference MVP, and the NCAA Division III Final Four MVP. Although he departed following the 2016-17 season, his recruiting class helped Nebraska Wesleyan capture the 2018 NCAA Division III National Championship.
