Standish, Me. - The Saint Joseph's College men's soccer team
erupted for four first half goals and defeated Thomas College 5-0
in today's home opener. Senior Harrison Deah
(Monrovia, Liberia) recorded two goals in the first half.
St. Joe's got on the board quickly as FR Doug
MacCallum (Hingham, MA) netted a pass from GR
David Rosquete (Auburn, ME) in the seventh minute
of play and Deah notched his first goal on a penalty kick at 33:39.
MacCallum assisted on a goal by FR Eamonn Harrigan
(Caribou, ME) to go up 3-0 with just over four minutes to go in the
half.
The Monks took a commanding 4-0 lead to complete the first half
as Deah gathered a pass from SO Kevin Melega
(Easthampton, MA) and drew keeper Dan Philbrook (Manchester, CT) to
the right post and drilled his second goal of the match with two
seconds on the clock.
FR Paul Roy (Saint David, ME) scored the final
goal of the match at 71:22 off a cross by Harrigan. FR Greg
Cavanaugh (Haverhill, MA) earned his first shut-out in
just his second intercollegiate contest.
The young Terrier squad was led by FR Payton Austin (Lisbon
Falls, ME) with 4 shots and SO Seth Hartman (Wiscasset, ME) with 3
shots.
St. Joe's travels to Southern Maine for a 4 p.m. match on Sept.
12 and Thomas plays at Lyndon State (VT) at 2 p.m. on Sept. 10.
