Box Score STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (7-7-1, 5-5-1 GNAC)
defeated Albertus Magnus (10-7-1, 7-4-1 GNAC) in a crucial
conference contest at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday afternoon.
SJC keeper Jaci Lorenzen '14 (Windham, ME) made six saves in
her fourth shutout effort of the season.
Goals by Lauren Chouinard '14 (Gorham, ME) and Mikayla
Call '11 (Portland, ME/McAuley) clinched the victory for the
Monks in a matchup that held GNAC Tournament implications for both
sides. Saint Joseph's will play at Johnson & Wales
University (7-9-1, 5-4-1 GNAC) tomorrow at 1:00 PM in another
must-win match, while Albertus, which fell out of contention to
host a GNAC tourney first-round game with the loss, caps the 2010
regular season with the result against St. Joe's.
Chouinard scored off an Ashley Beaulieu '14 (Durham, ME)
pass in the 32nd minute to propel the Monks to a 1-0 lead and Call
netted her seventh marker of the year at the 71:06 mark,
unassisted, to double the SJC advantage. Call's tally was a
controversial one, as one of the officials signaled for a foul
during the play but no whistle was blown. Call, who was streaking
toward the net, managed to score while some of the Falcons'
players believed the play would be dead. After some discussion, it
was deemed there was no foul on the play and the goal would be
allowed.
The Falcons poured on the pressure late and registered three
corner kicks in the last three minutes, but none of the attempts
yielded a shot.
For Call, the goal gives her 106 career points and places her in
a tie for the second-highest point total in program history. Cindy
Kamszik '97 tallied 106 points – with 45 goals and 16
assists - in her SJC Hall of Fame career, while Call now has 41
goals and 24 assists in 73 games over nearly four full seasons.
Prior to kickoff, Saint Joseph's paid tribute to the
program's four seniors: Call, Crystal LaClair (Claremont,
NH), Jessica Needham (East Bridgewater, MA) and Elizabeth Theberge
(Danvers, MA).
With the win, St. Joe's improves to 5-0 in the history of the
series against Albertus Magnus. The victory also brings a six-game
winless streak to a halt for the Monks, who had not won since a 3-1
triumph over Mount Ida on September 28th despite allowing two goals
or less in each of those results. Four of the five losses during
the six-game stretch have come by just one goal.
St. Joe's will travel to Johnson & Wales tomorrow and
Southern Maine (3:00 PM) on Thursday in what the team hopes will be
a primer for the GNAC Tournament, which begins with a quarterfinal
round on Saturday, October 30th.
