Men's Soccer Wins 2009 Title Rematch

Box Score

STANDISH, ME – St. Joe's (3-1, 1-0 GNAC) defeated Emerson College (1-2, 0-1), 3-1, in a rematch of the 2009 GNAC Championship contest at Westerlea Way Field on Saturday. Jack LaFreniere '13 (Alton, NH) registered the game-winning goal and added an assist in the 2010 conference-opener for both sides.

Joe Happnie '11 (Rockland, MA) and Matt Barlion '13 (Auburn, ME) also tallied goals for the Monks and Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) notched a pair of assists against the Lions. SJC keeper Nick Campasano '12 (Goffstown, NH) played very well between the pipes and posted 10 saves in his fourth collegiate start.

Jacob Lawrence '13 (Clifton, VA) scored the lone Lions marker, with Eric Dabdoub '11 (Monterrey, Mexico) adding an assist on the 64th-minute score. Emerson netminder Noah Price '12 (Apex, NC) made eight saves against the Monks, who defeated the Lions, 2-1, in the GNAC Championship last fall.

Happnie opened the game-scoring at the 33:49 mark with his first goal of the season off a Robins pass. LaFreniere doubled the SJC advantage nearly four minutes into the second stanza with his second tally of the year, which was the eventual game-winner. Robins served as the playmaker on this goal as well, with the sophomore speedster finishing the play with a ball placed in the lower left corner.

Lawrence put the visitors on the board with a finish on a Dabdoub dish up the middle of the field. The sophomore forward collected the ball off the hop and beat Campasano with a shot to the lower right corner.

Barlion provided the Monks with breathing room on the board with his first tally of the year in the 87th minute. LaFreniere set up the play with a crossing pass and was credited with an assist on the play.

Emerson held advantages in shots (18-17) and corner kicks (5-4) in the loss.

Saint Joseph's will play at Husson University tomorrow at 3:00 PM, while the Lions will host Daniel Webster on September 15th at 5:30 PM.
