Monks Tip Beavers, Improve to 12-2

Box Score

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's College (12-2, 6-2 NAC) tipped University of Maine-Farmington (6-6, 5-3 NAC), 1-0, in a North Atlantic Conference (NAC) field hockey match at Mercy Field on Wednesday afternoon.

The Monks netted the lone goal of the conference contest in the 22nd minute, when senior Theresa Hendrix (Scarborough, Maine/Cheverus) netted her fifth goal of the year off a Carley Denis (Lewiston, Maine) feed on a penalty corner play. Sophomore defender Meghan Williams (Greenland, Maine/St. Thomas Aquinas) served as the corner injector and pushed a long left-to-right pass to Denis, who passed off to Hendrix in the middle of the circle. The senior midfielder quickly turned and fired a knuckleball shot to the left corner of the cage to lift the hosts to a 1-0 lead with 13:10 remaining in the first half.

Beavers keeper Curran Brierley (East Hampton, N.Y.) made four saves in a losing bid while Monks netminder Emma Astbury (Bridgewater, Vt.) made one stop to record her seventh shutout of the year.

Saint Joseph's held a 13-5 advantage in shots and an 11-5 lead in penalty corners on the afternoon. The shutout victory counts as the Monks' ninth goose-egg effort of the 2013 campaign and the team has not allowed a goal in five home games this fall.

With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 9-21 in the history of the series with Maine-Farmington. The Beavers edged the Monks by a 3-2 score last fall, but St. Joe's has won six of the last eight meetings overall, including a trio of 1-0 triumphs.

Saint Joseph's returns to action on Saturday when the team travels to New London, N.H. for a 12:00 PM conference contest versus Colby-Sawyer College.
