Panthers Clip Monks in OT, 1-0

Box Score

NEW HAMPTON, N.H. – Plymouth State University (10-5, 7-4 LEC) nipped Saint Joseph's College (11-6, 5-1 GNAC), 1-0 in overtime, in a non-conference field hockey match up on Wednesday evening.

THE LEAD

After 70 minutes failed to produce a winner, the Panthers punched home the game's only tally just 47 seconds into extra play when freshman Kate McPherson (Conway, N.H.) received a penalty corner feed from junior Katie Martin (Waterbury Ctr., Vt.) and slammed a shot into the right side of the cage for the victory.

THE KEEPERS

Saint Joseph's sophomore netminder Megan Baker (Gorham, Maine) registered nine saves in the setback while Plymouth second-year Alivia Bates (Pennsauken, N.J.) made four stops on the evening.

TEAM STATS

Plymouth State held considerable advantages in shots (11-5), shots on goal (10-4), and penalty corners (11-5) in what was the final regular season contest for both teams.

NOTEWORTHY:

  • Sophomore defender Kayla Veilleux (Sabattus, Maine) made a huge defensive save during a Plymouth State penalty corner bid in the 53rd minute
  • For the Monks, tonight's loss snaps an eight-game winning streak with all eight triumphs being of the shutout variety
  • The McPherson goal snapped the Monks' shutout string at 630 minutes and 47 seconds, the longest goose-egg stretch in program history
  • The goal allowed was also the first given up by SJC during the month of October – the Monks have outscored opponents by a 32-1 margin this month

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 4-4 in the history of the series with Plymouth State University, a team the Monks defeated by a 4-2 margin in Standish last fall.

NEXT!

As the top seed in the GNAC Tournament, the Monks have earned a first-round bye and will face the winner of the #5 Mount Ida / #4 Lasell quarterfinal next Wednesday (TBD).

Plymouth State will play at Fitchburg State University in a Little East Conference (LEC) Tournament quarterfinal State on Saturday, October 29th at 7:30 PM.
