Saint Joseph's Blanks Johnson & Wales on Senior Day, 3-0

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (14-3, 7-0 GNAC) blanked Johnson & Wales University (6-11, 4-3 GNAC), 3-0, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey matchup at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Following a scoreless first half, the Monks came out firing after the break and netted three goals off penalty corners in the third frame. Just 3:11 into the third quarter, freshman Sophia Jacques (Peru, Maine) scored her fifth tally of the year off an Alexandra Belaire (Greene, Maine) pass.

Just over three minutes later senior Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine) netted her sixth goal of the season off a Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine) feed.

In the 41st minute freshman Olivia Esposito (North Reading, Mass.) tacked on her fourth goal of the year off a feed from Jacques.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC junior Alexandria Simpson (Pascoag, R.I.) turned away two shots to record her fourth shutout of the season while JWU netminder Grace Pendergast made 15 saves in a losing effort.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held considerable leads in shots (29-2), shots on goal (18-2), and penalty corners (16-3) in the victory.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 6-1 all-time versus Johnson & Wales University and has now defeated the Wildcats in three-consecutive meetings.

SENIOR MOMENT:

Prior to the start of today's contest the Monks held a brief ceremony to honor the program's three seniors: Maddy Beaulieu (West Gardiner, Maine), Libby Pomerleau (Limerick, Maine), and Kylee Veilleux (Sabattus, Maine). The 2020 senior class has helped Saint Joseph's win three GNAC Championships while posting a 62-18 (.775) overall record, including a 25-2 (.926) mark in GNAC play, during their time on the turf.

Saint Joseph's will host Plymouth State University in a non-conference matchup on Monday at 6:00 PM.
