Monks Shoot Past Beavers, 4-2

Box Score

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (5-1) defeated UMaine-Farmington (2-3), 4-2, in a non-conference field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Wednesday night.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Senior Olivia Esposito (North Reading, Mass.) opened the scoring just 44 seconds into play with her first of two goals on the evening. The senior midfielder received a pass inside the circle from Cailin Seavey (Dover-Foxcroft, Maine) and hooked a shot past UMF keeper Grace DiMarco (Uxbridge, Mass.).

Senior Emma Rutledge (Alfred, Maine) netted her team-leading fifth goal of the season at the 13:51 mark with a shot off a rebound on a corner play. UMF senior forward Chloe Horn (Arlington, Mass.) put the Beavers on the board 25 seconds later when she beat SJC freshman goalie Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine), who appeared to not see the shot through traffic.

St. Joe's hit pay dirt 1:39 into the second stanza when junior Aimee Adams (Gardiner, Maine) scored off an Alison Michalik (Rutland, Mass.) feed with a blast from just inside the circle to make it a 3-1 game.

UMaine-Farmington scored off a penalty corner 2:24 into the third period, when junior Abby Pomerleau (Saco, Maine) – sister of former SJC standout Libby Pomerleau '20 – potted her first goal of the season.

Clinging to a 3-2 advantage, the Monks managed to put the game away in the 42nd minute when Esposito knocked in her second of the game off a long right-to-left pass from Rutledge.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (16-4), shots on goal (11-4), and penalty corners (12-4).

THE KEEPERS:

Colins made one save and allowed one goal in the first half before giving way to senior Isabella Anton (Mont Vernon, N.H.), who yielded one UMF tally in the second stanza.
