STANDISH, Maine – Freshman forward Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) tied a program record with six goals to help Saint Joseph's College (11-7, 8-2 GNAC) defeat Dean College (0-15, 0-10 GNAC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey contest at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday afternoon.

SENIOR MOMENT:

Prior to today's match the SJC field hockey program held a brief ceremony to honor the team's six seniors: Aimee Adams (Gardiner, Maine), Morgan Dalton (Livermore Falls, Maine), Alexa Gutowski (North Conway, N.H.), Molly McCluskey (Orono, Maine), Megan Quirion (Oakland, Maine), and Anna Walker (Scarborough, Maine). Since coming to campus as freshmen in 2019, this graduating class has helped the Monks post a 43-16 (.728) overall record with an incredible 25-4 (.862) mark in GNAC play as well as a GNAC Championship and subsequent NCAA Tournament berth in 2019.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Waryas scored the Monks' first four goals, including three in the opening 10 minutes, to stake the hosts to an insurmountable advantage. First-year Emilia Galimberti (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored 20 seconds into the third quarter and Waryas hit pay dirt again in the 38th minute to make it a 6-0 game.

Adams and Quirion found the back of the net in a three-minute span and Waryas tied the single-game goals (and points) record with her sixth marker of the afternoon in the 43rd minute to lift the Monks to a 9-0 cushion.

McCluskey lifted a shot to the top of the cage on a Quirion corner injection as time expired in the third quarter and Adams and freshman Kienna Haley (Scarborough, Maine) capped the scoring with goals in the 53rd and 55th minute, respectively.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's posted leads in shots (62-0), shots on goal (38-0), and penalty corners (11-0) in the lopsided victory. The Monks broke the team's game records for shots (previously 58).

ON THE RECORD:

Waryas broke the team's record for shots in a game with 19 attempts. Kelsey Dumond '17 held the record previously with 17 in a win over Mount Ida College on October 15th, 2016. Waryas also tied the SJC game marks for goals (6) and points (6) with Adams, who accomplished the same feat against Regis College earlier this fall.

THE KEEPERS:

The Monks split time in net as Kassidy Collins (Gardiner, Maine) and Paige DeMascio (Greene, Maine) went untested in the shutout effort. The Bulldogs also split minutes in the cage, as junior Mackenzie Fillion (New Bedford, Mass.) made 12 saves while allowing four goals in the first half and freshman Allie Stockwell (Burrillville, R.I.) yielded eight goals with 13 stops in the second stanza.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's is now 2-0 all-time versus Dean College, a team the Monks defeated by a 10-0 margin in Franklin, Mass. last season.
