Monks Topple Eagles, Claim Alumni Cup

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (2-2) toppled Husson University (1-2), 91-74, in a non-conference men's basketball contest at Mike McDevitt Court on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks and Eagles battled through 10 lead changes and six tie scores in the first half with the hosts holding a 38-33 cushion heading into intermission.

Saint Joseph's managed to put the game out of reach early in the second stanza. Clinging to a 42-37 edge 2:41 into the final frame, the Monks recorded a 21-9 run which was capped by a Griffin Foley (Portland, Maine) three-pointer and the Royal Blue on top by a 63-46 score with 11:21 remaining.

The Monks claimed a game-high 25-point advantage when sophomore Teagan Hynes (York, Maine) made a three-pointer with 4:42 on the clock.

CAPTURE THE CUP:

With the win, Saint Joseph's claims the Alumni Cup, which is awarded to the winner of the annual Husson/St. Joe's matchup. The Monks now own a 3-2 record in the Alumni Cup series, which began during the 2017-18 campaign.

STATS OF THE GAME:

Saint Joseph's shot 50.0% (34-68) from the floor and 40.5% (15-37) from beyond the arc while Husson countered by shooting 39.7% (23-58) and 13.3% (2-15) from the field and downtown, respectively.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Freshman John Paul Frazier (York, Maine) tallied 18 points, five rebounds, three assists, and a pair of steals
  • Senior Drew Shea (Mount Desert Island, Maine) scored 15 points with seven rebounds and three assists in just 16 minutes
  • Foley added 15 points, five rebounds, four assists and a pair of steals
  • Grad student Nicholas Curtis (Windham, Maine) put up 11 points with three boards
  • Junior Camryn Yorke (Auburn, Maine) came off the bench to contribute eight points, four rebounds, and three assists
  • Freshman Wani Donato (Portland, Maine) added seven points, eight rebounds and three assists
  • Senior Ashtyn Abbott (Farmingdale, Maine) chipped in with six points, four assists and a pair of caroms

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Junior Jeremy Maronta (Brooklyn, N.Y.) led the Eagles with 19 points in 21 minutes off the bench; he made 9-of-10 shots from the FT line and added seven rebounds, three assists and three steals
  • Grad Taylor Schildroth (Blue Hill, Maine) added eight points, four rebounds and two assists
  • Grad Justice Kendall (Baltimore, Md.) netted seven points with five boards

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win Saint Joseph's improves to 39-53 in the history of the series with Husson University and brings an end to a three-game losing streak at the hands of the Eagles.
