Box Score NEW LONDON, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (6-5-0, 5-3-0 GNAC) rolled past Mitchell College (2-8-0, 0-8-0 GNAC) with a 5-0 shutout in Great Northeast Athletic Conference women's soccer action at Alumni Field on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks featured a balanced attack with five different players scoring in the victory. Abbey Laney (Standish, Maine) opened the scoring in the sixth minute off a feed from Bridget Davis (Scarborough, Maine). Less than nine minutes later, Jordan Huntley (Stafford Springs, Conn.) doubled the lead on an assist from Eliese Perron (South Portland, Maine), and just 59 seconds later Sydney Gallop (Hermon, Maine) buried an unassisted tally to make it 3-0 at halftime.
In the second half, Madyson Ayres (Saco, Maine) netted her first collegiate goal in the 49th minute before Lelia Weir (Bar Harbor, Maine) capped the scoring with her first goal of the year in the 82nd minute.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's dominated across the board, outshooting the Mariners 41-2 with a 22-1 advantage in shots on goal. The Monks also held a 7-1 edge in corner kicks.
THE KEEPERS:
Mitchell goalkeeper Ronnie Keays turned aside 17 shots in a strong effort despite the lopsided result, while Saint Joseph's sophomore netminder Ashlyn Guerette (Merrimack, N.H.) needed just one save to secure her fifth shutout of the season.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 7-0-0 all-time against Mitchell, a team the Monks clipped by a 2-1 score in Standish last fall.
