WELLESLEY, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (11-7) struck first in the fourth quarter, but host Wellesley College (6-11) responded with a pair of late goals to secure a 2–1 non-conference field hockey victory at Butler Stadium on Tuesday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
After three scoreless quarters, the Monks broke through in the 49th minute when senior Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) tallied her 21st goal of the season to give Saint Joseph's a 1–0 edge. The lead was short-lived, as Wellesley answered just 18 seconds later on a goal from Claudia Summers to even the score.
The Blue carried the momentum and converted the game-winner in the 58th minute when Annika Schermerhorn found the back of the cage off a penalty corner, sealing the 2–1 result.
TEAM STATS:
Wellesley held the lead in shots (30-11), shots on goal (11-4), and penalty corners (13-5) in the victory.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) turned aside nine shots in 60 minutes of play while Wellesley's Hannah Simmonds made three saves in her team's comeback triumph.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the setback, Saint Joseph's falls to 3-6 all-time versus Wellesley College.
