Late Goal Sinks Saint Joseph's

NEW HAVEN, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (3-6-0, 3-2-0 GNAC) dropped a 4-3 decision to Albertus Magnus College (6-4-1, 3-2-0 GNAC) in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at Celentano Field on Saturday afternoon.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The contest featured end-to-end action, with Albertus striking first in the seventh minute when Lorenzo Lauria buried a finish off a setup from Malik Ouro-Adei. The Monks responded just over three minutes later as Cole Bishop (South Portland, Maine) netted the equalizer on an assist from Nick Marion (Windham, Maine).

Saint Joseph's surged ahead in the 18th minute when Hayes Sweeney (Hollis, Maine) converted off a Griffin Forbes (Manchester, N.H.) feed, but Lauria leveled the score again at the 21-minute mark on a pass from Aiden Coelho.

Junior Zander Haskell (Scarborough, Maine) provided the Royal Blue with a 3-2 cushion in the 33rd minute with an unassisted strike, a lead the Monks carried into halftime.

The Falcons controlled the second half, outshooting St. Joe's by a 9-0margin, and drew even at 56:36 when Coelho found the back of the net. Lauria completed his hat trick with the game-winner in the 82nd minute, finishing another Coelho setup to give the hosts a 4-3 victory.

TEAM STATS:

Albertus Magnus held the lead in shots (14-9) and corner kicks (5-2) while both teams steered six shots on goal in the conference matchup.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC senior Logan Davis (Naples, Maine) allowed four goals and made two saves in the loss while Albertus Magnus netminder David Lucero gave up three tallies with three stops in his team's triumph.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the result, Saint Joseph's falls to 11-10-0 all-time versus Albertus Magnus, a team the Monks defeated 3-0 in Standish last fall. The setback was the program's first loss when scoring at least three goals since a 4-3 defeat to Mount Ida on October 11, 2010. The Monks are now 162-9-3 (.940) when scoring three or more times and had won 93-consecutive games when reaching the three-goal mark prior to today's defeat.
