Emerson Defeats Saint Joseph's in Four Sets

BOSTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (8-9, 4-0 GNAC) fell in four sets to Emerson College (11-8, 3-2 NEWMAC), 3-1 (25-23, 24-26, 25-18, 25-18), in non-conference women's volleyball action at Brown & Plofker Gym on Thursday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The opening set was tightly contested with four ties, but Emerson used timely hitting to edge out a 25-23 win. The Monks responded in the second frame, rallying from multiple deficits and capitalizing on seven tie scores and three lead changes to claim a 26-24 victory. From there, however, the hosts took control. Emerson limited Saint Joseph's to just eight kills in the third set and closed the match with a steady 25-18 decision in the fourth.

FOR THE MONKS:

  • Senior Victoria Briones (El Paso, Texas) and Greta Mackintosh (Plymouth, Mass.) led the attack with 11 kills apiece, with Briones adding 11 digs for a double-double
  • Junior Larisa Comolli (Nashua, N.H.) delivered six kills and six block assists and junior Kylie Giakoumis (Middletown, N.Y.) added six kills while hitting at a team-best .294 clip
  • Freshman setter Maddie Garrett (Euless, Texas) handed out 13 assists to go with four kills while sophomore Riley Greenley (Newark, Del.) dished out 13 helpers and collected six digs
  • Senior Nadia Sixto (Chattanooga, Tenn.) chipped in with six kills, four block assists, and four digs

FOR THE LIONS:

  • Rachel Dickerson paced the hosts with 14 kills and 12 digs while Chloe Hokenson contributed nine kills, 22 assists, and seven digs
  • Lauren Yoo controlled the back row with 16 digs while Sophia Schiappa (6) and Kori Meissner (5) combined to post 11 service aces

TEAM STATS:

Emerson narrowly out-hit the Monks (.175 to .164) while holding advantages in service aces (20-8), digs (53-49), assists (42-32), and total points (69-64). Saint Joseph's posted the lead in kills (48-44) and total blocks (8-5).

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 1-7 all-time versus Emerson College, a former Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) opponent that last faced the Monks during the 2012 season.

Saint Joseph's returns to GNAC play on Saturday, October 11 when the Monks host Rivier University (11:00 AM) and Norwich University (3:00 PM) in a conference tri-match.
