STANDISH, Maine – The University of Maine at Farmington (5–2) handed Saint Joseph's College (2–5) an 85–78 setback in non-conference men's basketball action on Mike McDevitt Court at the Harold Alfond Center on Tuesday night.
The loss brings an end to the Monks' 18-game home winning streak, which stood tied for the longest in NCAA Division III entering the season. Saint Joseph's had not dropped a home contest since January 13, 2024 when SJC suffered an 86-76 loss to Albertus Magnus.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The first half featured seven lead changes as both teams traded momentum throughout the opening 20 minutes. Farmington found its rhythm behind sophomore guard Zach McLaughlin, who hit three threes during a mid-half surge and later pushed the Beaver lead to 38–31 before foul trouble sent him to the bench. Saint Joseph's capitalized with a quick 6–0 burst to reclaim the lead, but back-to-back threes from Charlie Houghton helped UMF take a 44–41 advantage into halftime.
Farmington controlled the early stages of the second half, using dribble penetration from Gabe Michaud to ignite a 15–6 run that extended the lead to 65–52. Kory Donlin and Brayden St. Pierre added key threes during the stretch as the Beavers consistently generated high-percentage looks.
The Monks battled back, trimming the margin to three on multiple occasions behind Derek Salvatore (Johnston, R.I.), Davis Mann (Falmouth, Maine), and Tong Maiwen (Juba, South Sudan), but UMF had the final answer. St. Pierre, Jason Reynolds, and Houghton each buried late threes in the final three minutes to fend off the rally and secure the 85–78 road win.
STATS OF THE GAME:
Three-point shooting proved to be the glaring difference tonight as the Beavers shot 48.0% (12-25) from beyond the arc while the Monks posted a paltry 16.0% (4-25) rate from deep in the seven-point setback.
