Huskies Secure Costello Cup

GORHAM, Maine – University of Southern Maine (4-1) defeated Saint Joseph's College (3-4), 70-35, in a non-conference women's basketball contest at Warren G. Hill Gymnasium on Sunday evening.

COSTELLO CUP:

With the win, Southern Maine claims the coveted Costello Cup, presented annually to the winner of the contest between the rival institutions, for the first time since the 2014-15 campaign – ending a string of nine-consecutive Saint Joseph's victories.

The Costello Cup, presented annually to the winner of the contest between the rival schools, honors the late Dr. Richard "Doc" Costello, former USM Athletic Director and long-time basketball coach for both the men's and women's programs.

Southern Maine is now 20-13 all-time in the Costello Cup series with Saint Joseph's.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks never found their rhythm offensively as the Huskies opened the contest with eight unanswered points and quickly built a double-digit advantage, leading 21-7 after the first quarter. USM broke the game wide open in the second stanza, outscoring SJC by a 19-9 margin en route to staking a 24-point lead (40-16) going into intermission.
