STANDISH, Maine – #2 Saint Joseph's College (12-8, 9-1 GNAC) saw its postseason run come to an end with a 2-0 setback to #3 Colby-Sawyer College (12-6, 8-2 GNAC) in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) Field Hockey Tournament Semifinal on Wednesday evening at the SJC Athletics Complex.
PLAYOFF IMPLICATIONS:
With the victory, Colby-Sawyer advances to the GNAC Championship, which will be played at top-seeded Dean College on Saturday at 1:00 PM.
The setback signals the end of collegiate field hockey for the Monks' five seniors: Emilia Galimberti (Wolfeboro, N.H.), Chloe Grosso (Westbrook, Maine), Kienna Haley (Scarborough, Maine), Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine), and Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.).
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Colby-Sawyer grabbed an early lead when sophomore forward Brooke Farquhar (Gorham, Maine) knocked home a feed from freshman Jillian Fredette (Weare, N.H.) at the 5:23 mark of the first quarter.
The visitors doubled their advantage midway through the third quarter when the Farquhar–Fredette connection struck again in the 43rd minute, sealing the Chargers' place in the GNAC Championship.
Despite sustained offensive pressure and a 12–3 advantage in penalty corners, the Monks were unable to find the back of the cage as Charger graduate goalkeeper Addy Araneo (Yorktown Heights, N.Y.) stood tall with seven saves.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the lead in shots (8-7), shots on goal (7-6), and penalty corners (12-3) in the losing bid.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) made four saves – including an incredible diving stop early in the third quarter – while Araneo turned away seven shots on the evening.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 9-3 in the history of the series with Colby-Sawyer College, a team the Monks clipped by a 2-1 score in overtime earlier this fall.
