Wheaton Tops Saint Joseph's in 2025 Opener

STANDISH, Maine – Wheaton College junior Declan Rhatigan (Holderness, N.H.) netted three goals to help lead the Lyons (1-0-0) past Saint Joseph's College (0-1-0), 4-0, in what was the 2025 season-opener for both programs at the SJC Athletics Complex on Friday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Rhatigan lifted his squad to a 1-0 edge in the ninth minute off passes from Austin Hoadley (South Kent, Conn.) and Owen Kane (Pembroke, Mass.). Barely a minute later, the Monks were flagged with a red card after taking down a Lyons player on a breakaway bid and were thusly forced to play a man down for the remainder of the night.

Rhatigan struck again, his time off a Camajé Easton-Smith (Hamilton, Bermuda) feed, in the 20th minute and completed the hat trick performance in the 51st minute with a strike off a Joey Everett (Danbury, Conn.) pass.

Freshman Tanner Rock (Clifton Park, N.Y.) capped the game scoring with his first career goal in the 87th minute.

TEAM STATS:

Wheaton held considerable advantages in shots (21-0), shots on goal (10-0), and corner kicks (9-0) in the winning performance.

THE KEEPERS:

SJC freshman starter Ziggy Babbott (Hinesburg, Vt.) allowed a goal and made one save in 9:59 between the pipes while senior Logan Davis (Naples, Maine) yielded three goals and turned away five shots in just over 80 minutes between the pipes.

Wheaton netminders Nick Phinney (Gorham, Maine) and Ty Nolon (Norwich, Vt.) were untested in 81:08 and 8:52 minutes of playing time, respectively.
