Box Score WESTON, Mass. – Seniors Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) and Kienna Haley (Scarborough, Maine) scored three goals apiece to lift Saint Joseph's College (2-2, 2-0 GNAC) past Regis College (1-3, 0-1 GNAC), 8-1, in a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey contest on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks opened the scoring in the seventh minute when freshman Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) converted a penalty stroke for her second goal of the season. Waryas followed with back-to-back strikes in the 13th and 22nd minutes, assisted by Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine) and Katie Yeaton (Farmington, Maine).
Regis trimmed the deficit to 3-1 when Ava Costello tallied her second of the year at the 23:31 mark, but Waryas completed her hat trick – and notched her sixth goal of the season – off an Emilia Galimberti (Wolfeboro, N.H.) feed in the 28th minute, giving the Monks a 4-1 halftime lead.
After the break, Haley took over on the offensive end, scoring three straight goals in a 12-minute span to stretch the margin to 7-1. Markham capped the scoring with an unassisted goal in the 49th minute.
BEYOND THE BOXSCORE:
The dual hat-trick performance by Waryas and Haley marked the first time two SJC players recorded three goals in the same game since Aimee Adams '23 and Megan Quirion '23 achieved the feat in a 12-0 win at Albertus Magnus on October 16, 2021.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's dominated the stat sheet, holding advantages in shots (30-4), shots on goal (24-3), and penalty corners (9-7).
THE KEEPERS:
Junior Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) allowed one goal in the first half, while senior Paige DeMascio (Greene, Maine) stopped both shots she faced after intermission. Regis goalkeeper Allayna Martone made 16 saves in the setback.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 15-7 all-time versus Regis and has now defeated the Pride in 11 straight meetings dating back to 2007.
