Monks Claim Thrilling Shootout Victory Over Sharks

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-2, 3-0 GNAC) clinched a 3-2 (2-0) shootout victory over Simmons University (0-6, 0-2 GNAC) in a hotly contested Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey matchup at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks struck first when senior Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) netted her team-leading eighth goal of the season off passes from Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) and Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine) 3:30 into the second quarter.

The hosts nearly carried a 1-0 edge into intermission, but a turnover in their defensive end led to a breakaway finish by Simmons freshman Nora Desrosiers (Attleboro, Mass.) with just 37 seconds left in the half.

The Sharks pulled ahead early in the third when sophomore Hailey Brisson (Weare, N.H.) buried a loose ball in front, putting Simmons on top 2-1.

Saint Joseph's rallied late as senior Kienna Haley (Scarborough, Maine) converted a one-timer off a perfect Markham feed in the 54th minute to force extra time.

Neither side could capitalize in two thrilling overtime periods. SJC junior keeper Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) stood tall with five saves in the closing minutes of the first OT, while Simmons nearly sealed the game in the 78th when Desrosiers broke free, only to see her shot carom off the post. Moments later, McLaughlin and senior defender Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) combined for clutch stops to extend the contest.

The game was ultimately decided in a penalty shootout. Markham and senior Emilia Galimberti (Wolfeboro, N.H.) scored for Saint Joseph's, while McLaughlin stonewalled all four attempts she faced, giving the Monks a 2-0 shootout edge.

TEAM STATS:

  • Shots: Simmons 19, SJC 18
  • Shots on Goal: Simmons 14, SJC 12
  • Penalty Corners: Even, 6-6

THE KEEPERS:

McLaughlin turned in one of the top goalkeeping efforts in recent program history, posting 12 saves—including nine in OT. Simmons sophomore Jamila Mohamed (Scarborough, Maine) was equally steady, finishing with 10 saves in defeat.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 22-12 all-time versus Simmons. The Monks snapped a four-game skid against the Sharks, earning their first victory in the series since 2019.
