NASHUA, N.H. – Saint Joseph's College (5-3, 4-1 GNAC) defeated Rivier University (2-7, 2-2 GNAC), 3-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action at Joanne Merrill Field on Saturday afternoon.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The Monks struck first in the opening quarter when freshman Myia SeeHusen (Corinna, Maine) tallied her first career goal at the 14:15 mark off a setup from classmate Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine). Rivier answered just before halftime, as Brianna Spinelli found the back of the cage with seven seconds left in the second frame off a feed from Kelsey Bain to level the score at 1-1.
Saint Joseph's quickly regained the lead early in the third quarter when Markham buried an unassisted tally at the 33:00 mark to make it 2-1. The Monks capped the scoring late in the fourth, as senior Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) finished a feed from Markham at 55:21 to secure the 3-1 victory.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held decisive advantages in shots (20-5), shots on goal (14-3), and penalty corners (15-4).
THE KEEPERS:
Junior Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) recorded two saves in the win for the Monks, while Rivier keeper Lily Gifford made nine stops in a losing effort.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 15-1 all-time against Rivier.
