WATERVILLE, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (0-1) suffered a 2-1 setback at the hands of Thomas College (2-1) in what was the Monks' 2025 season opener on Wednesday night.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
A fast start made the difference as Thomas hit pay dirt twice - with goals from Leah Knight and Samantha Thebarge - in the opening quarter to build a 2-0 cushion. Saint Joseph's battled back in the second half, as senior Maya Waryas (Bellows Falls, Vt.) converted off a Katie Yeaton (Farmington, Maine) setup in the 35th minute to cut the deficit in half. The Monks nearly equalized late on a penalty corner in the 54th minute, but shots from Waryas and senior Kienna Haley (Scarborough, Maine) were turned away, allowing the Terriers to hang on for the 2-1 win.
TEAM STATS:
Thomas held the advantage in shots (19-8), shots on goal (9-4), and penalty corners (17-6) in the non-conference bout.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC junior Kimberly McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) kept the Monks in the game with seven saves while the Terriers split time in the cage, with starter Eliya Drummond recording one stop in the first half and Mackenzie Toner posting a pair of saves in the second half.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the loss, Saint Joseph's falls to 24-12 in the history of the series with Thomas College and has now dropped three-consecutive games to the Terriers for the first time since losing four straight during the 2003-2005 seasons.
