AMHERST, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (2-3) suffered a pair of non-conference losses in the Amherst College Invitational on Saturday afternoon. The Monks opened the day with a 3-1 (21-25, 25-21, 25-18, 25-14) setback to Oswego State in the opener and capped the day with a 3-0 (25-21, 25-22, 27-25) loss to Western New England.
OSWEGO STATE 3, SAINT JOSEPH'S 1:
The Monks opened the day with a 25-21 opening-set victory, but could not maintain momentum as the Lakers responded with three straight wins to claim the 3-1 triumph to remain undefeated (5-0) on the season.
MONKS STAT LEADERS:
- Senior Victoria Briones (El Paso, Texas) posted a double-double with 11 kills and 16 digs and added a pair of service aces
- Freshman Emily Mendelson (Springboro, Ohio) notched eight kills and four block assists
- Junior Greta Mackintosh (Plymouth, Mass.) chipped in with eight kills and three block assists
- Juniors Larisa Comolli (Nashua, N.H.) and Kylie Giakoumis (Middletown, N.Y.) tallied five kills apiece
- Freshman Maddie Garrett (Euless, Texas) contributed 21 assists and five digs
- Junior Sabrina Arcilla (Rivervale, N.J.) added 10 digs and freshman Livy McDonough (West Friendship, Md.) posted nine digs each
WESTERN NEW ENGLAND 3, SAINT JOSEPH'S 0
The Monks and Golden Bears battled through three closely-contested sets, but the latter managed to tip the former by a combined total of nine points – including a 27-25 third set – to prevail.
MONKS STAT LEADERS:
- Mendelson paced the Monks with nine kills while registering a .333 hitting percentage
- Mackintosh posted a team-best .357 hitting rate with six kills on 14 attempts
- Sydney Swanson (Columbus, Ohio) chimed in with five kills and four digs
- Garrett and sophomore Riley Greenley (Newark, Del.) delivered 13 and 11 assists, respectively
- Briones posted four kills and seven digs
- Arcilla contributed with nine digs, a team-high
