NASHUA, N.H. – Saint Joseph's College (1-2-0, 1-0-0 GNAC) scored three goals in a matter of 11 minutes to defeat Rivier University (0-1-2, 0-1-0 GNAC), 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action on Sunday afternoon.
TALE OF TWO HALVES:
The Monks and Raiders began their 2025 conference opener as scheduled Saturday afternoon and completed the first half before severe thunderstorms forced officials to suspend play. It was later decided that the game would resume today at 4:00 PM.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
The second half mirrored the scoreless first stanza until sophomore Curtis Metcalf (South Portland, Maine) broke through in the 74th minute. Off a long throw-in from freshman Keegan Cary (Hallowell, Maine), junior Diego Robinson (Hinesburg, Vt.) flicked the ball into the box, where Metcalf converted for the go-ahead goal.
Sophomore Nick Marion (Windham, Maine) scored less than three minutes later off a Patricio Mowa (Luanda, Angola) pass to double the SJC advantage and second-year Godin Ndayishimiye (Burundi, Africa) provided an insurance tally, unassisted, at the 84:07 mark.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held a 4-3 edge in shots on goal while both teams recorded 12 shots and Rivier posted a 3-1 lead in corner kicks.
THE KEEPERS:
SJC freshman goalie Ziggy Babbott (Hinesburg, Vt.) made three saves to record his first collegiate shutout while his counterpart, Rivier netminder Logan Clough, made one stop in a losing effort.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the win, Saint Joseph's improves to 17-2-1 all-time versus Rivier University and has now defeated the Raiders in 17-consecutive meetings dating back to the 2008 season.
