Blue Jays Edge Monks, 2-1

WEST HARTFORD, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (4-5, 1-1 GNAC) fell to the University of Saint Joseph (6-3, 3-0 GNAC), 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action on Wednesday evening.

HOW IT HAPPENED

The Monks controlled the opening quarter with a 6-2 advantage in shots and five penalty corners. Freshman Lily Huntley (Wilton, Maine) put Saint Joseph's ahead at 12:20 with an unassisted tally, her first goal of the season.

The Blue Jays pulled even with 2:42 remaining before halftime when Charlotte Kaminski scored off an Emily Curtis assist following a penalty corner.

USJ took the lead just 2:46 into the third quarter. After senior goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) stopped an initial attempt and another shot was blocked, Juliana Meglio scored to give the hosts a 2-1 advantage.

Saint Joseph's continued to press for the equalizer, with sophomores Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) and Myia SeeHusen (Corinna, Maine) having shots saved in the third and fourth quarters, respectively. Markham's final attempt went wide with 2:37 remaining, and the Blue Jays held on for the victory.

TEAM STATS

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (16-15) and penalty corners (10-6), while the Blue Jays led in shots on goal (9-5) in the conference contest.

THE KEEPERS

McLaughlin recorded seven saves in 60 minutes for the Monks, while USJ goalkeeper Jaci Felix-Hull made four saves in the victory.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING

Saint Joseph's is now 5-1 all-time against the University of Saint Joseph. Wednesday's result marked the Monks' first loss in the series, which began in 2021, and the third consecutive meeting decided by one goal.
