Markham Lifts Monks Past Pilgrims in Double Overtime, 2-1

STANDISH, Maine – Sophomore Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) scored 45 seconds into double overtime to lift Saint Joseph's College (6-6, 3-2 GNAC) past New England College (6-5, 2-3 GNAC), 2-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) field hockey action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

After a scoreless first half, freshman Dasia Alberico (Skowhegan, Maine) put the Monks ahead at the 34:55 mark with her fifth goal of the season off an assist from freshman Lily Huntley (Wilton, Maine).

The Pilgrims pulled even with 8:27 remaining in regulation when Mary Kelley scored an unassisted goal.

Senior goalkeeper Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) made three saves during the first overtime period to keep the Monks alive, while Alberico had a potential game-winner turned away with 22 seconds remaining.

Saint Joseph's needed just 45 seconds in the second overtime to settle the contest. Following a penalty corner, Markham netted her seventh goal of the season off Huntley's second assist of the afternoon to secure the victory.

TEAM STATS:

New England College held the advantage in shots (24-19) and shots on goal (15-11) while both teams attempted 14 penalty corners in the conference contest.

THE KEEPERS:

McLaughlin recorded 11 saves in the victory, while New England College goalkeeper Annie Raduazzo made eight stops.

Junior Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine), freshman Chloe Masse (Oakland, Maine), and junior Gabriella Thomas (Lewiston, Maine) each contributed a defensive save for the Monks.
