STANDISH, Maine – Senior Zander Haskell (Scarborough, Maine) and junior Nick Marion (Windham, Maine) scored two goals apiece to lead Saint Joseph's College (5-2-5, 4-0-4 GNAC) past Elms College (7-4-1, 4-4-0 GNAC), 5-1, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Saturday.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Haskell opened the scoring at the 12:50 mark off an assist from senior Aidan Sugrue (Spring Lake Heights, N.J.). The Monks held a 9-2 advantage in shots during the opening half and carried the 1-0 lead into intermission.
Saint Joseph's added two goals early in the second half to create some breathing room. Marion struck unassisted at 52:08, and Haskell followed at 57:39 off a feed from senior Divin Mpinga (Kinshasa, DRC) to extend the lead to 3-0.
An own goal put Elms on the board at 61:32, but the Monks answered less than two minutes later when Marion finished off an assist from freshman Khalil Ghosheh (Scarborough, Maine) at 63:24.
Senior Haytham Ramadan (Khartoum, Sudan) capped the scoring at 81:51 when he netted his first collegiate tally with Ghosheh collecting his second assist of the afternoon.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (21-12) and shots on goal (14-6), while Elms led in corner kicks (4-1) in the conference contest.
THE KEEPERS:
Senior Alex Bachmann (Scarborough, Maine) recorded four saves in 81:50 to earn the victory. Sophomore Connor Messervey (Hermon, Maine) added two stops during the final 8:10.
Elms goalkeeper Jacob Horstmann made nine saves in the setback.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
With the victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 5-1-1 all-time against Elms. The Monks are unbeaten in the last six meetings, and the five goals and four-goal margin represent their best marks in the series.
