McDonough Serves Monks Past Mariners, 3-0

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (9-7, 4-1 GNAC) defeated Mitchell College (2-6, 0-4 GNAC), 3-0, in Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) volleyball action on Saturday afternoon. The Monks earned the sweep by set scores of 25-8, 25-21 and 25-21.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's took command early in the opening set, scoring the first four points before using a nine-point run to turn an 8-5 lead into a 17-5 advantage. Sophomore Livy McDonough (West Friendship, Md.) served four aces during the surge, and the Monks hit .364 with nine kills and just one error in the 25-8 victory.

Mitchell opened a 6-3 lead in the second set, but Saint Joseph's answered with an 8-1 run to move ahead 11-7. The Monks maintained the lead from there, with senior Greta Mackintosh (Plymouth, Mass.) delivering the final kill to secure a 25-21 win.

Saint Joseph's built a 22-15 advantage in the third before Mitchell rallied with six consecutive points to pull within one. The Monks responded by taking the final three points, including a block by freshman Sophia Fallon (New Canaan, Conn.) and sophomore Mary McNulty (Warwick, R.I.), to complete the sweep.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held the advantage in kills (27-20), hitting percentage (.122 to -.011), assists (25-15), service aces (12-5), digs (41-35) and total blocks (5-2) in the conference contest.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • McDonough recorded eight service aces and four digs - her aces total is the most by an SJC player in three sets since Kailyn Chamberlin '24 delivered eight strikes in a 3-0 win over UMaine-Presque Isle on September 9, 2023.
  • Sophomore Addison Thomas (London, Ohio) led the Monks with seven kills on 17 attempts for a .294 hitting percentage and added nine digs and a service ace.
  • Mackintosh tallied six kills and four block assists.
  • Senior Kylie Giakoumis (Middletown, N.Y.) posted five kills on 10 attempts for a team-high .400 hitting percentage and added three digs.
  • Fallon collected five block assists, two kills, two digs and a service ace.
  • Sophomore Maddie Garrett (Euless, Texas) handed out 13 assists and added four digs and a kill.
  • Junior Riley Greenley (Newark, Del.) contributed seven assists, five digs and two service aces.
  • Senior Sabrina Arcilla (Rivervale, N.J.) registered a team-high 10 digs.
  • Senior Larisa Comolli (Nashua, N.H.) chipped in with three kills and three assists.

LEADERS – MITCHELL:

  • Cimber Jenkins paced the Mariners with six kills and added nine digs and five assists.
  • Chloe Maguire recorded five kills on 10 attempts for a .400 hitting percentage.
  • Emily Rizzo tallied eight digs, three service aces, two kills and a block assist.
  • Kiersten Veenstra handed out eight assists and added three digs and a service ace.
  • Jaslene Flores collected nine digs.

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

Saint Joseph's improved to 7-4 all-time against Mitchell. The Monks have swept the Mariners in each of the last two meetings, including a 3-0 victory in Standish on October 18, 2025.
