Saint Joseph's Falls to Bowdoin, Tops Carroll in THE Spring Games Invite

WINTER HAVEN, Fla. – Saint Joseph's College split a pair of THE Spring Games Invitational contests at the Diamondplex on Tuesday afternoon, falling to Bowdoin College, 12-4, in the opener before bouncing back with a 6-4 victory over Carroll University in the nightcap.

Saint Joseph's totaled 16 hits and 10 runs across the two contests. The Monks were unable to hold an early lead against Bowdoin in game one, but responded with a fast start and timely late execution against Carroll to finish the day on a winning note.

GAME ONE – Bowdoin 12, Saint Joseph's 4

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's struck first in the top of the opening inning. Freshman Kiera Gabric (Hampden, Maine) singled and freshman Olivia Thomas (Belgrade, Maine) followed with a bunt single before senior Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) moved both runners up with a sacrifice bunt. Senior Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine) then delivered a two-run single up the middle to put the Monks on top, 2-0.

Bowdoin answered immediately with three runs in the bottom of the first. Anika Ewert scored the tying run on a two-run double by M. Flannery-Goodman and Maddie Paschke followed with an RBI single to give the Polar Bears a 3-2 lead. Bowdoin added two more runs in the second inning to stretch the advantage to 5-2.

The Polar Bears added single runs in both the fourth and fifth innings to build a 7-2 cushion before Saint Joseph's mounted a rally in the sixth. Gabric opened the frame with a single and Thomas was hit by a pitch before Tirrell singled to load the bases. Bouchard drove in Gabric with an RBI single and junior Kryslin Stearns (Concord, N.H.) followed with a sacrifice fly to score Thomas and trim the gap to 7-4.

Bowdoin put the game away in the bottom half of the inning, scoring five times to account for the 12-4 final.

GAME TWO – Saint Joseph's 6, Carroll 4

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's came out swinging and struck for four runs in the bottom of the first. Gabric singled to start the frame and later scored on a double by Bouchard. Tirrell also came home on the play before Stearns added a sacrifice fly, freshman Jayden Sullivan (Hancock, Maine) ripped an RBI double, and sophomore Makayla Quintal (Gorham, Maine) followed with a run-scoring single to give the Monks a 4-0 lead.

Carroll chipped away with single runs in the second, third, fourth, and fifth innings to pull even at 4-4.

The Monks answered in the bottom of the sixth. Sophomore Rebecca Osgood (Corinth, Vt.) led off with a single and freshman Jaylah Trottier (Biddeford, Maine) moved her into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. Gabric then singled up the middle and stole second before both runners came home on a strikeout and throwing error, giving Saint Joseph's the 6-4 advantage.

Senior Miranda Northrup (Whitefield, Maine) closed the door in the seventh to secure the victory.
