Saint Joseph's Splits with Anderson (IN)

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College split a RussMatt Central Florida Invitational doubleheader with Anderson University (Ind.) on Wednesday at Lake Myrtle Park, falling 11-7 in the opener before rebounding with a 5-4 victory in the nightcap.

The Ravens jumped ahead early and used a five-run seventh inning to pull away in game one despite the Monks rallying from a three-run deficit to take the lead midway through the contest. Saint Joseph's responded in the second game behind timely hitting from junior Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, Mass.) and sophomore Nic Frink (Scarborough, Maine) while freshman Henry Paquette (Pelham, N.H.) delivered a strong start and senior Ryan Thurber (South Portland, Maine) secured the save as the Monks earned the split.

GAME ONE – Anderson (Ind.) 11, Saint Joseph's 7

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Anderson struck quickly with three runs in the top of the first inning. Griffin Wolf singled home Daniel Barreca before Landon Gum was hit by a pitch with the bases loaded and Kellan Bailey drew a bases-loaded walk to give the Ravens an early 3-0 advantage.

Saint Joseph's answered in the bottom half of the frame when sophomore Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, N.H.) singled home O'Leary and sophomore Nick Villano (Peabody, Mass.) followed with an RBI single to trim the deficit to one.

The Monks surged ahead with a three-run third inning. Sophomore Connor Finn (Kingston, Mass.) lined a two-run single through the right side to plate Carlisle and O'Leary, and freshman Josh Hersey (Salisbury, Mass.) added a sacrifice fly to push the lead to 5-3.

Anderson chipped away with a sacrifice fly in the fourth before tying the game in the fifth on RBI singles by Gum and Ian Potts. Saint Joseph's briefly evened the score at 6-6 later in the inning when Frink scored on a wild pitch.

The Ravens broke the game open in the seventh, sending 10 batters to the plate and scoring five runs. Daniel Barreca delivered a two-run single during the rally and Jon Dorsch added an RBI single as Anderson built an 11-6 lead.

Saint Joseph's scored once in the bottom of the seventh when senior Ryan Kastle (Concord, N.H.) doubled down the left-field line to bring home senior Michael Richards (Melrose, Mass.), but the comeback attempt fell short.
