Mariners Post Pair of Walk-off Wins Over Monks

NEW LONDON, Conn. – Saint Joseph's College (13-6, 1-3 GNAC) was edged twice by Mitchell College (9-6, 3-1 GNAC) in a non-conference baseball doubleheader on Sunday, falling 3-2 in the opener and 1-0 in the nightcap.

The Monks totaled 16 hits on the day and received strong starting pitching in both contests, but the Mariners came away with walk-off victories in each game.

GAME ONE – Mitchell 3, Saint Joseph's 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Mitchell opened the scoring in the bottom of the second when Nicholas Bracale singled home Michael Ficocelli, but Saint Joseph's answered in the third when sophomore Nick Villano (Peabody, Mass.) doubled and later came home on a Nick Brindle (Pittsfield, Mass.) groundout.

The Monks moved in front in the fifth when sophomore Nic Frink (Scarborough, Maine) belted a solo home run, but the Mariners answered in the home half as Adam Vartanian scored on a Ryan Dennis single to knot the game at 2-2.

The game remained tied until the bottom of the seventh, when Jayden Sgro reached on an error and Adam Vartanian ended the contest with a walk-off triple.

GAME TWO – Mitchell 1, Saint Joseph's 0

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The nightcap was a pitchers' duel throughout, as neither team scored through the first eight innings.

The Monks threatened in the top of the eighth, putting runners on second and third with two out and Frink at the plate. The sophomore slugger ripped a liner to deep left that appeared destined for extra bases, but Mitchell's Jayden Sgro made a tremendous diving catch to end the inning and preserve the scoreless tie.

In the bottom of the ninth, Christopher Piscione reached on an error, moved up on a balk and a wild pitch, and scored the game-winner when Jayden Sgro dropped down a walk-off squeeze bunt.
