Sharks Sweep Monks in GNAC Action

BOSTON, Mass. – Saint Joseph's College (6-12, 0-4 GNAC) dropped both ends of a GNAC softball doubleheader at Simmons University (6-16, 2-2 GNAC) on Saturday afternoon, falling 9-1 in five innings in the opener before suffering a 7-6 walk-off setback in game two.

The Sharks capitalized on patience at the plate throughout the day, drawing 14 walks in the twinbill, and erased a late one-run deficit in the nightcap to complete the sweep.

GAME ONE – Simmons 9, Saint Joseph's 1 (5 inn.)

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Simmons struck first with three runs in the bottom of the opening inning and kept the Monks off the board until the fourth, when senior Sadie Tirrell (Naples, Maine) came around to score on a Simmons error to trim the deficit to 3-1. The Sharks answered with four runs in the bottom half of the frame to regain control and then added two more in the fifth to end the game early.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Simmons built a 5-0 lead through five innings before the Monks stormed back. Saint Joseph's scored four times in the sixth on RBI doubles from senior Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine), freshman Brianna Eastman (West Baldwin, Maine), and sophomore Addison French (Rochester, N.H.), along with an RBI single from  Stearns, to make it a one-run game. In the seventh, Stearns came through again with a two-run double to put the Monks in front, 6-5, but the Sharks answered in the bottom half with a pair of runs to walk it off.

With the sweep, Simmons improves to 29-20 all-time versus Saint Joseph's and has now defeated the Monks in four consecutive meetings.
