Monks & Raiders Split GNAC Doubleheader

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (17-7, 4-4 GNAC) split a Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) baseball doubleheader with Rivier University (7-9, 2-2 GNAC)I'v at Larry Mahaney Diamond on Wednesday afternoon. The Monks claimed the opener, 5-2, before the Raiders answered with a 9-5 victory in the nightcap.

Originally scheduled to be played Thursday in Nashua, New Hampshire, the conference twinbill was moved to Larry Mahaney Diamond due to field conditions at Rivier. Despite playing in Standish, Saint Joseph's served as the designated visiting team in both contests.

GAME ONE – Saint Joseph's 5, Rivier 2

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's broke through in the third inning when senior Jared Wilhelm (Tolland, Conn.) launched a solo home run to left for a 1-0 lead.

The Monks doubled the advantage in the fourth when senior Michael Richards (Melrose, Mass.) connected on a solo homer to left-center.

Saint Joseph's created separation with a three-run sixth. Freshman Theo Masella (Manchester, Mass.) singled to open the inning and Richards followed with a base hit before senior Luke Doughty (York, Maine) was hit by a pitch to load the bases. Freshman Josh Hersey (Salisbury, Mass.) then drew a walk to force in a run, a passed ball brought home another, and sophomore Jake Carlisle (Portsmouth, N.H.) added an RBI single to make it 5-0.

Rivier got on the board with two runs off three hits in the bottom of the sixth. Senior Dylan Aliberti (Sandown, N.H.) singled and junior Liam Stott (Londonderry, N.H.) followed with a base hit before senior Matt Labrecque (Manchester, N.H.) drove in a run with a groundout and junior Alex Gallicano (Alexandria, Va.) added an RBI single. The Raiders later put the tying run on base in the seventh, but SJC sophomore closer William Dionne (Somerset, Mass.) entered and recorded the final two outs to preserve the win.
