Saint Joseph's Falls to Bates College

STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (24-9) dropped a 14-2 non-conference decision to Bates College (17-7) in non-conference baseball action on Tuesday afternoon at Larry Mahaney Diamond.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Bates seized control early, capitalizing on an error and three hits to score four times in the opening inning before erupting for seven more runs in the second for an 11-0 lead. Henry Prince did the bulk of the damage for the Bobcats, delivering a two-run double in the first and a grand slam in the second, while Max Dushney added a three-run homer later in the frame.

Saint Joseph's broke through in the bottom of the third. Senior Luke Doughty (York, Maine) reached on an error, freshman Josh Hersey (Salisbury, Mass.) followed with a fielder's choice, and junior Vinny O'Leary (North Quincy, Mass.) singled before senior Jack Moltenbrey (East Longmeadow, Mass.) lined an RBI single to left-center to plate Hersey and cut the deficit to 11-1.

The Monks threatened again in the fourth when senior Michael Richards (Melrose, Mass.) doubled and Doughty walked, but Bates worked out of the jam. The Bobcats then added three more runs in the fifth to stretch the advantage to 14-1.

Saint Joseph's picked up its final run in the fifth. Sophomore Connor Finn (Kingston, Mass.) singled, sophomore Nic Frink (Scarborough, Maine) followed with a base hit, and senior Ryan Kastle (Concord, N.H.) lifted a sacrifice fly to center to bring Finn home. The Monks put two men aboard in the seventh, but could not trim the margin further.
