LEWISTON, Maine – Bates College (11-16) swept a non-conference softball doubleheader from Saint Joseph's College (14-18) on Wednesday afternoon at Lafayette Street Field, taking the opener 8-2 before closing out the day with an 8-0 victory in the nightcap.
In game one, the Monks took a 1-0 lead in the top of the second when sophomore Makayla Quintal (Gorham, Maine) drove in senior Chantelle Bouchard (Biddeford, Maine), but Bates answered immediately on a solo homer by Isabel Bettencourt. Saint Joseph's pulled even again in the sixth on an RBI groundout by freshman Kiera Gabric (Hampden, Maine), only to see Bates break the game open with a three-run fifth and a four-run sixth. Bouchard went 4-for-4 in the opener, while Quintal finished 2-for-3 with a run and an RBI.
The Bobcats completed the sweep in game two, limiting Saint Joseph's to five hits in an 8-0 shutout. Bates scored twice in the second, added a run in the fifth, and put the game away with a five-run sixth inning. Senior Addison French (Rochester, N.H.) and Bouchard each had hits for the Monks, while freshman Olivia Thomas (Belgrade, Maine) took the loss in the circle.
Saint Joseph's returns to action on Thursday, April 16th, when the Monks host UMaine-Farmington for a doubleheader beginning at 3:30 PM in Standish.
