Monks Sweep Home Tri-Match

STANDISH, Maine – Senior outside hitter Greta Mackintosh (Plymouth, Mass.) totaled 26 kills while hitting .407 as Saint Joseph's College (3-4, 1-0 GNAC) swept a home tri-match against the University of Saint Joseph (3-5, 0-1 GNAC) and Husson University (0-4) at the Harold Alfond Center on Saturday.

The Monks opened the day with a 3-1 Great Northeast Athletic Conference (GNAC) victory over USJ before completing the sweep with a 3-0 triumph over Husson. USJ defeated Husson, 3-0 (25-20, 25-16, 25-22), in the middle match.

HOW IT HAPPENED:

The Monks used a 5-0 run behind the serving of junior Riley Greenley (Newark, Del.) to build a 21-13 advantage in the opening set. Freshman Sophia Fallon (New Canaan, Conn.) closed the 25-20 victory with a kill.

USJ evened the match by edging Saint Joseph's in the second set, 25-23, after the Monks rallied from an 18-12 deficit to tie the score at 23-23.

Saint Joseph's regained control with a 25-15 victory in the third frame. The Monks carried the momentum into the fourth set and established a 24-19 lead before USJ scored four consecutive points. Fallon halted the rally with a match-clinching kill.

TEAM STATS:

The Monks held advantages in kills (43-30), service aces (11-4), digs (67-58), and total blocks (10-2). Saint Joseph's limited USJ to a .040 attack percentage.

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Mackintosh recorded a match-high 14 kills with a .324 attack percentage
  • Fallon supplied eight kills, four total blocks, and a service ace
  • Sophomore Addison Thomas (London, Ohio) collected a match-high 17 digs with five kills
  • Sophomore Maddie Garrett (Euless, Texas) registered 16 assists, 13 digs, and two aces
  • Greenley added 11 assists, 10 digs, and a match-high five aces
  • Senior Jessica Christman (Virginia Beach, Va.) contributed 11 digs, three assists, and an ace

LEADERS – UNIV. OF SAINT JOSEPH:

  • Shaye Harris and Sienna Martin recorded nine kills apiece
  • Gabriella Wanner totaled 15 assists, 12 digs, and a block assist
  • Alyssa Dugas added 11 digs, two assists, and a service ace

HOW IT HAPPENED:

Saint Joseph's pulled away from a 15-15 tie with a 6-1 run in the opening set and secured the 25-19 victory on a Thomas kill.

The Monks took control of the second stanza with an 8-0 surge that turned a 1-1 tie into a 9-1 advantage. SJC maintained its cushion and claimed the set, 25-15.

Husson held five set-point opportunities during an extended third frame, but Saint Joseph's answered each time. With the score tied at 31-31, Fallon delivered a kill before a Husson attack error completed the 33-31 victory.

TEAM STATS:

Saint Joseph's held advantages in kills (36-24), service aces (12-8), digs (47-43), and attack percentage (.248-.098).

LEADERS – SAINT JOSEPH'S:

  • Mackintosh posted a match-high 12 kills with only one error in 20 attempts for a .550 attack percentage
  • Fallon contributed seven kills and a block assist
  • Sophomore Mary McNulty (Warwick, R.I.) added six kills and a block assist
  • Garrett totaled 18 assists, eight digs, and three aces
  • Thomas recorded nine digs, three kills, and an ace
  • Christman chipped in with eight digs, three service aces, and two assists

LEADERS – HUSSON:

  • Autumn Peterson posted eight kills, 13 digs, and three service aces
  • Lilly Andreasen added eight kills, nine digs, and a block assist
  • Eden Fraser registered 17 assists, six digs, and two aces

HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:

With the opening victory, Saint Joseph's improves to 15-4 against USJ and extends its winning streak in the series to five matches. The Monks' victory over Husson improves their all-time record against the Eagles to 33-15.
