STANDISH, Maine – Saint Joseph's College (4-4, 1-0 GNAC) erased a two-goal deficit and later forced overtime, but the University of Southern Maine (6-3) prevailed, 4-3, in double overtime Friday afternoon in nonconference field hockey action at the SJC Athletics Complex.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Southern Maine built a 2-0 halftime lead on Izzy Folsom's penalty stroke at 11:20 and an Addison Battis goal at 16:10.
Sophomore Ava Markham (Belfast, Maine) put the Monks on the board with a penalty stroke at 35:39. Just 1:11 later, freshman Ashley Inman (Steep Falls, Maine) scored her first collegiate goal off a pass from freshman Chloe Masse (Oakland, Maine) to tie the game at 2-2.
Bri Townsend restored Southern Maine's lead at 50:57, but junior Zoey Lailer (Limington, Maine) answered with a slick give-and-go strike off a Markham pass following a penalty corner at 55:16. Saint Joseph's generated six shots in the first overtime, including five on goal, before Maddie Niles scored on a rebound - after SJC senior netminder Kimberley McLaughlin (Lewiston, Maine) made an incredible diving stop - at 74:32 to end the game.
TEAM STATS:
Saint Joseph's held the advantage in shots (20-17), shots on goal (14-13), and penalty corners (14-6).
THE KEEPERS:
McLaughlin made eight saves for the Monks, while Southern Maine's Haylee Romasco stopped 11 shots. Junior Katie Yeaton (Farmington, Maine) added a defensive save for Saint Joseph's.
HISTORICALLY SPEAKING:
Saint Joseph's is now 8-21 all-time against Southern Maine. The last three meetings have each been decided in overtime, with Southern Maine winning all three.
