STANDISH, Maine – Bates College (1-1-0) scored less than two minutes into the contest and held on to defeat Saint Joseph's College (1-2-1), 1-0, in non-conference men's soccer action at the SJC Athletics Complex on Tuesday evening.
HOW IT HAPPENED:
Bates netted the game's only goal at the 1:52 mark when Bora Ceranoglu headed a perfect right-to-left cross in the box from Andrew Jean Baptiste.
The Monks quickly looked for an equalizer, as freshman midfielder Damir Brkic (South Portland, Maine) put a shot on goal in the fifth minute and followed with another attempt less than two minutes later.
Junior goalkeeper Alex Bachmann (Scarborough, Maine) kept Saint Joseph's within striking distance by making five saves in the opening half. The Monks' defense limited Bates to seven shots and one attempt on goal following intermission, with Bachmann making his final stop in the 81st minute.
Junior forward Nick Marion (Windham, Maine) recorded a pair of shots for Saint Joseph's, while Brkic led the Monks with three attempts.
THE KEEPERS:
Bachmann finished with six saves in the setback, while Bates goalkeeper George Nassar stopped one shot to earn the shutout.
TEAM STATS:
Bates held advantages in shots (19-7), shots on goal (7-1), and corner kicks (10-3).
