STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph 's College lost both games to Thomas
College in their home opener today at Ward Field by scores of 2-1
and 4-0.
Game 1
Saint Joe's (5-9) dropped the first game 2-1 as Thomas held a
7-5 advantage in hits. Senior captain Helene Liaci (Clifton, NJ)
went 2-for-3 with a double, and sophomore Tessa Grindle (Bangor,
ME) recorded a double for St. Joe's.
Sophomore Kayla Beaudoin (Augusta, ME) scored the first run of
the game to give Thomas a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning. Beaudoin
hit a double and was moved to third on a single by junior Jen Lane
(Fairfield, ME). First Year Kim Denbow (Readfield, ME) singled and
notched the RBI as Beaudoin scored.
Saint Joseph's answered back in the sixth inning as senior
captain Kahler Dowling (Augusta, ME) reached on an error and Helene
Liaci doubled, moving Dowling to third. Sophomore Jamie Morrison
Auburn, ME) reached on a fielder's choice and Dowling's pinch
runner, freshman Danielle Caron (Auburn, ME) was thrown out at
home. Senior Darcy Lee (Windham, ME) reached on a fielder's choice
and advanced to second while Morrison advanced to third and Liaci
scored on an error.
The score was tied 1-1 at the end of 7 innings and both teams
were given an opportunity to begin the 8th inning with a runner on
second base. Junior Jen Couture (Waterboro, ME) was placed on
second for Thomas and was quickly moved to third on a sacrifice by
senior Jasmine Carey (Manchester, ME). Junior Brindi Riley
(Raymond, ME) reached first and Couture scored the game winning run
on an error.
Dowling was placed on 2nd in the bottom of the eighth and Liaci
moved her to third with a sacrifice. Dowling was thrown out at home
after Morrison grounded out to third.
Game 2
Thomas pitcher junior Joy Ireland (Clinton, ME) limited St.
Joe's (5-10) to just 3 hits and recorded 2 doubles en route to a
4-0 victory.
Couture scored for Thomas in the 3rd inning and Ireland doubled
and scored in the 4th inning to go up 2-0. Ireland hit a 2 RBI
double in the 5th inning scoring Beaudoin and Riley to give Thomas
a commanding 4-0 lead.
Senior captain Helene Liaci gave St. Joe's some hope in the 6th
inning as she smashed a triple with two outs, but she was left
stranded as Morrison flew out to left field.
Saint Joe's will play a double header at Brandeis University
(MA) on Sunday at 1:00.
