Standish, ME - Sophomore Kevin
Melega (Easthampton, MA) completed his first career hat
trick at 76:04 by blasting a goal off a corner kick by freshman
Doug MacCallum (Hingham, MA) to lead the Monks to
a 3-1 victory over Newbury College.
With yesterday's win, St. Joe's evens their record at 8-8 while
Newbury drops to 5-10-1 on the season.
The Monks applied constant pressure to Newbury keeper junior Brian
Picanco (Lowell, MA) from the opening minutes with well-placed
crosses, but were unable to finish until Melega's first tally at
27:00 off a corner kick. St. Joe's held a 1-0 lead at the half.
In the 64th minute, an SJC corner kick set up Melega for his second
goal of the afternoon. The Monks brought the ball out and moved it
back to senior Kevin Hageman (Albion, ME) who
found senior David Hakes (Whitefield, NH). Hakes
crossed it to Melega for the header and a 2-0 St. Joe's lead.
Two minutes after Melega completed his hat trick, sophomore John
Mawson (Amherst, MA) put the Nighthawks on the board at 78:09 with
Newbury's only goal of the match.
Freshman Cory Smith (Ellsworth, ME) had 3 saves in
the win and Picanco had 4 saves for Newbury.
The Monks play at Endicott College at 4pm in a double-header
with the women's squad on Wednesday, October 25th.
