Box Score STANDISH, ME - Saint Joseph's College (5-3-1, 2-0 GNAC) defeated
University of Maine-Farmington (3-3), 1-0, in a non-conference
men's soccer match at Westerlea Way Field on Thursday afternoon.
Freshman midfielder Corey Grant
(Haverhill, MA) scored his second goal of the year in the
58th minute of play to seal the victory for the
Monks.
There was plenty of action, with several excellent scoring
opportunities, throughout the contest. Both goalkeepers proved up
to the task, as Will Pike '10
(Gorham, ME) recorded four saves for the Monks and UMF keeper Erik
Corcoran '12 (Gorham, NH) had five saves for the Beavers.
Pike now has four shutouts this fall and 12 in his
career, two shy of the program record held by Michael Bolanz
'00.
The Monks maintained possession for much of the first half and
Corcoran denied several SJC drives with athletic saves. One such
play was made on Joe Happnie '11
(Rockland, MA) in the 28th minute. The junior was set up
perfectly by a Doug MacCallum '10
(Hingham, ME) lead pass and was all alone in front of the UMF net,
but Corcoran challenged and made a close-range diving save to
maintain the scoreless tie.
St. Joe's held an 8-6 advantage in shots at intermission, with 5 of
those bids finding the Beaver net.
The Monks finally broke through 12:43 into the second stanza on a
play set up by Paul Robins '11
(Cornwall, England). After a UMF penalty, the junior midfielder
booted the ball from near midfield to the left side of the goal.
Grant quickly recovered the ball and placed it off
the top right post past Corcoran to notch his first career
game-winner.
The win over the Beavers is just the second in SJC men's soccer
program history. The Monks defeated UMF for the first time last
fall, 2-0 on September 23rd at Farmington, to gain the
first victory over the former MAC opponent in 21 tries.
Saint Joseph's will play the first of six consecutive conference
games at Suffolk University this Saturday at 2:00 PM. UMF will play
at Bates College on Tuesday at 4:30 PM.
