STANDISH, ME - In the eyes of the NCAA, Saint Joseph's (1-1-1)
tied SUNY-Plattsburgh, 2-2, in the consolation game of the St.
Joseph's (NY) Invitational Tournament on Sunday afternoon. For the
purposes of the tourney, the Monks out-dueled the Cardinals in a
penalty kick round after a pair of overtime periods.
Jesse West '12 (Sheldon, VT)
forced extra play by scoring a goal off a rebound with two minutes
left in regulation and Michael
Sanfilippo's '12 (Walpole, MA) PK marker in the
Monks' fifth attempt provided the Royal Blue with an unofficial
victory. Sanfilippo scored the first St. Joe's
goal and keeper Will Pike '10
(Gorham, ME) made 11 saves in the stalemate.
The Cardinals grabbed an early lead by scoring a goal at the 5:08
mark on a tic-tac-toe play. Anis Makaren placed a strike in the
lower left corner past Pike, with Pat Shaughnessy and Chris Taylor
earning assists on the play.
Sanfilippo tied the game nearly 30 minutes later with his first
goal of the season. The sophomore midfielder collected the ball
after a deflected shot and beat Plattsburgh keeper Mike Lind with a
strike to the top of the goal.
The match remained tied until the 75th minute when Makaren scored
his second goal of the contest off a pass from Shaughnessy at the
top of the six yard box.
West's second career NCAA goal came nearly 14 minutes later to knot
the game at two apiece. After two 10-minute overtime periods
yielded no scoring, the game went into a penalty kick round to
determine the consolation game victor. Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall,
England), Corey Grant '13 (Haverhill, MA), Pike and Sanfilippo all
scored on the PK opportunities.
St. Joe's will host Worcester State on Thursday, September 10th at
4:00 PM.
