Box Score LEWISTON, ME – Bates College (6-5-1) defeated Saint
Joseph's (6-7-1), 2-1, in a non-conference women's
soccer match on Tuesday afternoon. Monks keeper Jaci Lorenzen
'14 (Windham, ME) registered 10 saves in the losing
effort.
The Bobcats scored on their first shot of the game, as Tina
Tobin '12 (Lowell, MA) put the hosts on the board at the 2:59
mark, but the Royal Blue stayed in the game despite being outshot
by a 19-4 margin in the first half and 36-7 overall. A goal from
SJC freshman Jessica Capozzi (Saugus, MA) tied the game with 8:37
remaining in regulation, but Bates rookie Emily Weiner (Portland,
OR) scored just 72 seconds later to clinch the win for the
Bobcats.
Capozzi's goal, her third of the year, came after a
scramble near the Bobcats' goalmouth. It appeared that Ashley
Beaulieu '14 (Durham, ME) would score, as a kick by the
rookie forward got past Bates netminder Annie Burns '12
(Topsfield, MA), but Weiner was in position to stop the ball before
it crossed the goal line. Capozzi was there to clean up the rebound
and tie the game with Beaulieu earning an assist on the play.
With 8:25 left, Wiener took a pass from junior Alix Vandeventer
(North Attleboro, MA) and scored from the top of the Monks' penalty
area for the eventual game-winner, Wiener's second goal of the
season.
Vandeventer assisted on Bates' first goal as well, dribbling into
the Monks' box from the left side and dishing to junior Tobin for
an easy finish with 42:01 left to play in the first half.
For Lorenzen, the save total is the second-highest tally of her
young career. The first-year keeper recorded 11 stops in a 2-1
victory over Lasell College on September 18th. Burns made two saves
in the win for Bates.
Bates plays at NESCAC rival Middlebury on Saturday at 2 p.m.;
St. Joseph's will host Albertus Magnus in its final home game on
Saturday at 2:30 p.m.
