Box Score GORHAM, ME – Saint Joseph's (4-2, 1-0 GNAC) erupted
with three goals in a 15-minute span early in the second half on
their way to a 4-1 triumph over Southern Maine (0-5) Wednesday
afternoon. Greg Jentgen '14 (Columbus, OH) recorded the
eventual game-winning goal in the 61st minute.
After a scoreless opening 45 minutes, the Monks got on the board
in the 51st minute when senior back Eamonn Harrigan (Caribou, ME)
lofted a wind-aided, 45-yard free kick over USM senior goalkeeper
David Kreps (Agawam, MA) for his second goal of the season.
Ten minutes later, Jentgen beat a USM defender at the end line,
eluded a charging Kreps and knocked home an eight-yard shot for his
first collegiate goal. Sophomore Matt Barlion (Auburn, ME)
capped the Monks' scoring outburst when he ran onto a beautiful
diagonal through-pass from Dan McIntyre '14 (Sparta, NJ) and
beat Kreps from 12 yards out.
Southern Maine registered its first goal of the season when
sophomore Matt Powers' (Strafford, NH) free kick from the end line
was deflected by a St. Joe's defender for an own goal two
minutes later.
Paul Robins '11 (Cornwall, England) put the matter to rest
converting a penalty kick in the 84th minute.
Despite the score, Kreps kept the Huskies in the match
throughout the first half and finished with seven saves.
Junior Nick Campasano (Goffstown, NH) recorded two saves for the
Monks.
Saint Joseph's had the edge in play, rolling up a 14-5
advantage in shots and a 4-0 edge in corner kicks. After not
defeating the Huskies for six seasons, the Monks have now defeated
their cross-town rival in consecutive meetings for the third time
in the history of the matchup. With today's win, St. Joe's improves
to 7-11-3 against Southern Maine.
Both sides return to action Saturday, as the Monks will play
host to GNAC foe Lasell College at 2:30 PM, while USM will open its
LEC schedule with a 1:00 PM home match against UMass-Boston.
