Monks Breeze Past Falcons, 11-0 & 14-2

STANDISH, ME – Saint Joseph's (29-7, 19-3 GNAC) earned a pair of mercy-rule victories over Albertus Magnus College (0-27, 0-22 GNAC) at Richard W. Bailey Field on Monday afternoon. The Monks defeated the Falcons by an 11-0 margin in the opener before taking a 14-2 win in the nightcap.

Prior to the start of the twinbill, the Monks' three seniors – Alyssa Dunn (Standish, ME), Natasha Howard (Farmington, ME) and Kiera Walsh (Benton, ME) – were honored with a ceremony to recognize their contributions to the softball program. The trio has helped the Monks post a 114-48 (.703) overall record, including an astounding 77-19 (.802) mark in conference play, over four seasons.

Saint Joseph's rapped 12 hits, including four doubles, to en route to the five-inning win in the opener. Second baseman Connie Grovo '14 (Limington, ME) was 2-2 with three runs and a double, third baseman Heather Tripp '13 (Lovell, ME) went 2-2 with a run, a double and four RBI and shortstop Lindsay Moore '14 (Barrington, NH) was 2-2 with a run, a double and an RBI in the triumph.

Danyelle Shufelt '13 (Sutton, VT) added two runs, Dunn went 1-2 with two runs scored and a pair of RBI and Jordan VanRosendael '13 (Limington, ME) registered a double for the Monks.

Walsh, now 9-1 on the year, started and finished the game in the circle with eight K's and two hits allowed in five frames.

St. Joe's recorded 11 hits with two doubles and a pair of long balls to earn the 14-2 nightcap win. Dunn was 2-2 with two runs, two RBI and a home run and Moore belted a three-run bomb for the hosts. Cynthia Wescott '12 (Westbrook, ME) scored three runs and Shufelt crossed the plate twice in the win. In all, 10 different players recorded at least one hit in the closing contest.

Saint Joseph's starter Kayla Vannah '13 (Waldoboro, ME) improved to 4-1 on the season after allowing two runs off four hits and two walks in five innings. She struck out four in the triumph.

St. Joe's will play Norwich University in a GNAC doubleheader this afternoon. Start time and venue will be announced shortly.
