Monks Take Two from Cadets, 12-3 & 11-8

Box Score 1 | Box Score 2

NORTHFIELD, VT – Saint Joseph's (31-7, 21-3 GNAC) swept a GNAC doubleheader with Norwich University (10-22, 10-14 GNAC) on Tuesday afternoon. Junior outfielder Emily Leverone (Hampton, NH) went 7-9 with three runs, a double, a home run and eight RBI in the twinbill.

With the sweep, Saint Joseph's secures its position as the #2 seed in the upcoming conference tournament, which begins at the end of this week.

Leverone, who went 4-4 with five RBI in the opener, broke the Monks' career hits record with a solo home run in the top of the sixth. She now has 192 hits in just 122 games and broke the longtime mark held by Lisa Pichaske '98, who registered 187 hits in 170 career contests.

The Monks, ranked 25th in NCAA DIII Softball in batting average as of April 23rd, recorded 27 total hits in the two-game set and increased their team batting average to .362 through 38 games. The team's single-season record for batting is .365 (1992).

Danyelle Shufelt '13 (Sutton, VT) enjoyed a solid day at the plate with three hits, five runs and two RBI and Jill Howard '14 (Rochester, NH) added four hits and three RBI in the two-game set. Connie Grovo '14 (Limington, ME) added four hits, three runs and three RBI and Lindsay Moore '14 (Barrington, NH) had three hits, three runs and two RBI on the afternoon.

In the first game, Katelyn Call '12 (Portland, ME/McAuley) went 2-4 with a run and two RBI and Alyssa Dunn '11 (Standish, ME) belted a solo home run.

Several pitching milestones were reached in the sweep as well. Maddie Kluna '12 (Standish, ME), who collected the win in the opener and a save in the nightcap, became the sixth pitcher in program history, and the first since Kiera Walsh '11 (Benton, ME) in 2008, to register 100 strikeouts in a season. Walsh, who improved to 10-1 on the year with the winning decision in the second game, is the fourth pitcher since 1990 to notch three 10-win seasons during their career. She joins Dani Waterman '94, Kellee Murphy '97 and Sarah Webster '02 in the exclusive club.
